Muthuchippi The Echoes of Indian Philosophy in Sugathakumaris Poetic Imagination
Name of Author :
Dr.Sreeranjini G
Abstract:
Muthuchippi is a poem written by Sugathakumari in 1958, and it has a special place since it is her debut poem. This poem is a first person narrative of a nacre who submerges into the depths of the ocean carrying a water drop in her womb. This poem is very symbolic. It is a story of penance and sacrifice. There is a story regarding the formation of a pearl. On the night, when the star tiruvatira shines like a blazing Flintstone, a nacre will come up on the surface of the water from below the abyss of the sea and will be mesmerised at the sight of the magnificent and pleasant sky. At this time, a drop of mist will fall into this mother of pearl, and the nacre will close its layers and immerse itself into the bottom of the sea. Then there follows an incessant meditation, and at the end of this penance, the mist will turn into a beautiful pearl. The poet portrays this wonderful myth in the story of Nacre. The poets are masters in turning the hidden torments into priceless pearls using delicate imagination. This poem is no exception to that. This poem spews a drop of Sugathakumaris vision on life, which is filled with melancholy. The observation of Balamaniyamma that this melancholy is not consumed with despair is noteworthy here. The philosophical melancholy in Sugathakumari’s poem is infused with complete hope.
