Exploring the Relation between Culture, Inter Cultural Communication and Second Language Learning
Name of Author :
Dr. Muhammedali
Abstract:
Learning a second language means acquiring language skills, language systems and different kinds of competencies. Second language learning enables the earners to understand the users of the language and express own ideas in the language meaningfully in real life communicative contexts. In order to communicate effectively in the second language, the learners need to understand the culture related to it since culture and language are inseparable. According to Thanasoulas (2001), second language learning consists of grammatical competence, communicative competence, language proficiency and cultural understanding. This paper explores the relation between culture, intercultural communication and second language learning. The paper argues that it is necessary for the learners of English to understand other culture in order to communicate effectively and meaningfully in culturally and socially diverse context like India. Intercultural communication refers to the interaction between individuals from diverse culture.
