Teacher Education: Building Competent and Reflective Educators
Name of Author :
Dr. Sushma Bala
Abstract:
The modern teaching environment is demanding a paradigm shift of the mechanistic, execution based training to an all round model that focuses on development of reflective capacity and technical teaching skills. The research paper is a rigorous study on the ways in which current teacher education programs may be structured to balance the growth of practical teaching abilities and psychological practices of reflection. This study will use a concurrent mixed methods research design and will be used to explore a group of pre service and early career in service teachers within an eighteen months period to measure the changes in their clinical decision making, instructional flexibility, and professional identity. The numeric results show that the conventional behaviorist training paradigm is an efficient way to develop foundational technical skills and abilities like planning of a structured lesson and classroom management routines, without giving teachers the tools to overcome nonroutine teaching shocks or discuss systemic inequity in learning settings. A qualitative thematic analysis of reflective journals of candidates, video documented micro teaching lessons, and loop peer coaching shows that action and reflection in action are major catalysts that turn ordinary teachers into highly adaptive and analytical professionals. The paper ends with practical, institutionalized suggestions as to how to rewrite teacher education curricula to instill the practice of reflection in direct relationship with clinical field experiences, to create a more sustainable system by which we breed classroom-ready, dynamic teachers.
