LOVE AS RESISTANCE TO TIME AND ILLNESS IN THE NOTEBOOK BY NICHOLAS SPARK
Name of Author :
S. Subasri, B. Agilandeshwari
Abstract:
Nicholas Sparks The Notebook 1996 presents a poignant love story that transcends the conventional boundaries of romantic fiction. Beyond its surface narrative of lifelong devotion, the novel offers a profound meditation on love as a form of resistance against the inevitable forces of time and illness. This article examines how love in The Notebook functions as an enduring emotional and ethical commitment that withstands aging, memory loss, and Alzheimers disease. Through the characters of Noah Calhoun and Allie Nelson, Sparks portrays love not merely as passion but as perseverance, sacrifice, and remembrance. The narrative structure, characterization, and representation of illness, this study argues that The Notebook affirms love as a transcendent force capable of preserving human dignity and meaning in the face of physical and mental decline.
